Head of Food and Farming, National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales
Philip is Head of Food and Farming Department at the National Farmers Union, which is the engine room of sector policy work at the Union, working with and supporting the National Commodity Boards. He leads a team of commodity Chief Advisers, NFU Food Chain Unit and the Health and Welfare team. Philip has a both a commercial and public sector background in the food and agriculture sector. He moved to this role from Sainsbury’s Supermarkets where he was Senior Agriculture Manager and before that as Procurement and Agriculture Manager at livestock and meat processor Randall Parker Foods. Philip also has previous trade association experience at British Meat Processors Association and in Defra covering exotic disease control, market support measures and contingency planning in the food and agriculture sectors. Philip comes from a background spawned from agriculture in Northumberland and County Durham and heavy industry of the Tyne. He studied animal science at Newcastle University and has one daughter, Isabella, who shares his passion for growing food and eating it.
