Head of Nutrition UK, Compass Group PLC
Before embarking on her degree, Nicky Martin spent six months in Ghana in West Africa working as part of a team of volunteers at a local hospital and with malnourished children. She says that it was this experience that inspired her to learn more about nutrition and help to educate others on the topic.
Nicky completed her BSc (Hons) degree in Human Nutrition at Leeds Metropolitan University. The four year degree saw Nicky spend the first two years focusing on general nutrition, including modules of biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and psychology. She then spent her third year on a work placement with Compass Group UK & Ireland, teaching children about healthy eating and analysing food to advise on its nutritional standards. Her final year saw her specialise in public health nutrition.
Her career as a nutritionist officially began working in the education sector of Compass Group UK & Ireland, a leading provider of food and support services. In this role Nicky’s focus was working with children in schools to improve the nutritional status of the meals provided to them and also working to educate these children about the food they are eating and its nutritional value.
In 2011 Nicky moved to the position of Head of Nutrition for Compass Group UK & Ireland, a business that operates in over 10,000 UK sites and serves millions of customers every day. In her current role as Head of Nutrition, Nicky works closely with Compass’ various sector businesses, advising them on health and wellbeing and developing new initiatives that support consumers in maintaining a healthy balanced diet – ultimately leading to happier and healthier customers.
