Co-presenter of the BBC Eat Well For Less series and founder of award-winning independent retailer, The Naked Grocer

Chris Bavin

Green grocer, Chris Bavin is so full of character he was born to be on TV.  He is now co-presenter of BBC1’s new series Eat Well For Less with Greg Wallace which aired in early 2015.

His business, The Naked Grocer, is in Walton on Thames, Surrey and has twice won the title of ‘National Independent Retailer of the Year’ award.  Chris is a huge advocate of small independent retailers in the UK.

Having left school with what he describes as “less than desirable” GCSE results he tried his hand at various unglamorous jobs before finally finding an employer that would put up with him!  His job was importing flowers for a small company called Connaught Flowers.

He spent much of his working day at Western International Market which specialises in horticultural produce.   Chris found himself very at home with all the colourful characters and buzz of the wholesale market – this was his vocation.

After selling flowers into the wholesale markets for six years he took a side step to sell fruit and veg throughout the UK.  He created extraordinary relationships with the small independent green grocers and florists and shared their passion in striving to keep independent retail flourishing.

With the odds stacked against the independent retailer this did not deter Chris from embarking on his own project and in 2009 he and his wife Millie opened the Naked Grocer.  The shop is abundant with fresh produce including freshly baked bread sourced from local suppliers and has been a massive success.

Chris is passionate about educating and raising awareness in children of where food comes from and what’s involved in producing it.  One of his ambitions is to teach others how eating healthily can be cheap and easy to achieve.  School children are often invited to his shop to learn from him.
