Category Technical Manager, Tate & Lyle
William Callum Johnston Ballantyne is currently working as a Category Technical Manager for Bakery within EMEA at Tate & Lyle Plc. Alongside this role he is also the responsible Manager of the pilot plant facility in the UK (Mold, North Wales). With over fourteen years of experience in the food industry in chilled convenience products and ingredients for bakery, convenience foods and dairy applications too.
After studying and graduating with a BSc with honors in Food Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK in 2001 he has applied his academic studies in various roles since, having worked alongside major UK retailers and manufacturers while working on both own label and branded products to the UK consumer market. He also continued his commitment to the Food Sciences by verifying his status as a Certified Food Scientist (CFS) from the globally recognized Institute of Food Technology (IFT).
He possesses an open and supportive management style with a proven track record, that ensures results through empowerment. He has developed and successfully motivated a diverse group of people with multiple nationalities, personalities, specific needs and varying abilities and functions within the business unit and across different international locations. He continues to learn throughout his career having gained insights from the T&L Talent Academy, Global during 2014 – 2016, then further work on Strategic Influencing, People & Stakeholder Management. He has maintained relevant food industry qualifications also in Food Safety Management for Manufacturing & HACCP and currently sits on the HACCP team on the Global Operations site in Mold, UK.
He is constantly searching for new ideas then enabling the team to produce successful and profitable products. He is a determined & hardworking leader with a passion for quality and attention to detail. Constantly challenge existing practices, then able to implement quantifiable results in a changeable environment.
He is a keen cyclist, with his biggest achievement coming by riding the notorious Pyrenees Mountains circle of death, including the Col du Tourmalet (2115m). He has also completed the Great North Run six times with a PB of 1 hour 56 minutes and also competed in several sprint triathlons in recent years.
He currently resides in the beautiful City of Chester, UK with his young and happy family consisting of wife Helen (of 15 years) and children Kate (12), Harry (10) and Martha (7) plus their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog, Stan (17.5years).
