‘FreeFrom’ eating, we are told by YouGov and by Mintel, is now all the rage – whether or not you actually need to exclude gluten, dairy or any other allergen from your diet. Indeed, 27% of Brits say that someone in their household now avoids certain food as ‘part of a healthy diet’ (Mintel March 2016) while Nielsen tell us (September 2016) that if the current growth in ‘freefrom’ continues, in two years ‘it will be as big a market as the mineral water one’!

The FreeFrom Eating Out Awards were launched by the team behind the very successful Freefrom Food Awards two years ago when the regulations governing what an eatery needed to know about the allergens in their food changed. And if the entries are anything to go by, the food service industry has certainly realised that catering to the ‘freefrom’ market could be not only an interesting but a lucrative way to go!

Shortlisted entrants this year include everything from local fish and chippers to nationwide pub chains such as JD Wetherspoons – while Pathfinder Award winner, Indigo at One Aldwych shows that freefrom and fine dining most certainly do go together.

Says awards director, Michelle Berriedale-Johnson:

‘We are really pleased to see how this year's entry has grown both in terms of numbers and quality. Bigger players (such as Center Parcs or JD Wetherspoons) are now taking the sector seriously while the quality of the offer in the independents has just rocketed. We can’t wait to see what next year will bring!!'

Categories for the awards include not only eateries but the ever growing list of companies manufacturing products for food service: from staples such as gluten-free chips and bake-in-a-bag gluten-free table rolls to dairy-free pestos and gluten-free beers.

Winners and presentations

The winners will be announced at a presentation party at 3.30pm on Tuesday 22nd November, the first day of Food Matters Live at Excel in London’s Docklands. 

On November 24th at Food Matters Live, celebrity chefs Paul Gayler and Dominc Teague (of Indigo) will be demonstrating freefrom dishes along with last year’s winner, Chef Mark Kennett of Oscar and Bentley’s in Canterbury.
