Industry Briefing: Super Foods Peru

The Peru Trade and Investment Office in the UK, in conjunction with Food Matters Live hosted an industry briefing focused on Peruvian cuisine, the increasing opportunities connected to superfoods and their link to health and nutrition.

The event featured a series of high level speakers providing manufacturers, retailers and foodservice companies as well as professionals in nutrition and health with an insight into the latest developments connected to Peruvian food and drink.

 

Speakers:

Robert Ortiz

Robert Ortiz started his career at the Costa Verde restaurant in Lima, the capital of Peru. During his first years in London he worked in Italian and Spanish restaurants after which he took up a role at the Landmark Hotel, where he worked with senior chefs Georg Heise, Glen Watson and Gary Klaner. His next move took him to the Four Seasons Canary Wharf, where he augmented his appreciation of European-Latin gastronomy. Having worked for several years in the UK, he moved back to Peru to extend his knowledge and technique on the new trends of the Peruvian cuisine. In 2012, Virgilio Martinez invited him to collaborate on his Lima Restaurant project in London.  A year later, Robert Ortiz received a well-known culinary recognition when Lima received a Michelin star award. In 2014, the group opened a new restaurant, Lima Floral, nominating Robert as Executive Chef of both branches. 

Jaime Cárdenas Pérez, Director of the Peru Trade & Investment Office in the UK

BA in Mechanical Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, MSc in Engineering from Mississippi State University. In the public sector, he has been Deputy Director for Export Promotion as well as Deputy Director of Business Assistance Services of PROMPERU - Peru Export and Tourism Promotion Board,   Manager of Business Development from Prompex, and Director of the Trade Office of Peru in Taiwan. In the private sector, he has served as an Export Manager of the Textile Inca Group, International Business Manager of the “Sociedad Anònima Mercantil de Lima”, Export Manager of Industrias Electroquimicas and Peruvian Imports and Exports Consortium. In addition, he has worked as a Consultant for several institutions and companies on foreign trade and investment projects, as well as acting as the Regional Manager of Andean Biotrade project under UNEP and CAF. He has been a professor at PUCP, UPC, USM and other academic centres in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes teaching Sustainable Development, Biotrade, Marketing, Management and International business. Currently he serves as Director of the Peruvian Trade Office in the UK. 

 

David Young, David Young Consulting

David started his food and drink career with Sainsbury's over 25 years ago, responsible for buying perishable foods, establishing strong relationships and dynamic sales growth, wanting a breadth of experience he moved to Booker where he was responsible for buying and innovation for fast moving chilled foods and the operational disciplines that go with this. Headhunted by the Cooperative to set up the team that created co-operative UK was his last major buying role – leaving there as Head of Buying Fruit, Vegetables and Horticulture. Moving to the other side of the desk and able to use his natural creativity David took on Senior Sales and Marketing roles with The Cheese Company, Parmalat, amelca and McCambridge Ltd establishing success in growing both brands and Private Label with all the major UK multiples, Foodservice, Wholesale and Export.

In the last 2 Years David has concentrated on using this wealth of experience in developing, coaching and helping smaller businesses in the Food and Drink sector to get started, find their focus, develop new ideas, strengthen their relationships and grow profitably.

Erick Guillermo Vera Bazán, Cultivos del Valle

Founder and entrepreneur of the Superfood Peruvian Company “Cultivos del Valle”, which is focussed on develop innovative and well-being products based on fruits, vegetables and quinoa ingredients in order to target different ages in order to engage consumers with our variety millenary rich food.

Track record of 8 + years of experience as a problem solving orientated individual as a project manager in operations, implementing processes and building stronger commercial relationship with both internal and external stakeholders, in order to achieve successful results in major multinational companies worldwide.

Entrepreneurial scholarship award by Alliance Manchester Business School. Currently doing a MBA at Alliance Manchester Business School.
